Breast Augmentation still the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure

UK cosmetic surgery statistics Plastic Surgery Statistics 2012: brows up, breasts down

Despite a recession and the government review in plastic surgery following the breast implant scandal, plastic surgery procedures in the UK were up last year.

According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), a total of 43,172 surgical procedures were carried out in 2012, an increase of 0.2% on the previous year.

Breast augmentation (otherwise known as ‘boob jobs’) were still the most popular procedure overall although the numbers dropped slightly by 1.6% from 2011 to 2012.

The stats from 2011 took no account of the breast implant scandal, so this this is the first release of figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) to suggest the impact the scandal has had on the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure.

However, recent findings by european regulators have concluded that there is no evidence that women who have PIP breast implants are at higher risk of cancer.

Women also do not need to have the faulty implants removed as a precaution although they may wish to have them taken out if they feel anxious, according to a review of PIP safety published by the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR).

John Wilkinson, director of medical devices at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the UK, said: ” The PIP breast implants episode has been very distressing for women and I hope this new report provides reassurance for them.”

“The report findings support the scientific conclusions from Professor Sir Bruce Keogh’s independent expert group report that there is no evidence of a long-term threat to human health from PIP breast implants. ”

Desire Cosmetic Surgery use Eurosilicone implants in all our breast augmentation procedures, which are a premium product, and have always been made to the very highest standards, where as PIP implants were made of non-medical grade silicone.

Geordie Shore cast member wants Cosmetic Surgery

‘Geordie Shore’ stunner Marnie Simpson would love to make changes to her appearance by having boob and nose jobs, as well as better teeth.

Marine Simpson, Geordie Shore

Whilst the newest recruit to the ‘Geordie Shore‘ cast was a big hit with her male co-stars, the former Miss Newcastle runner up has admitted she’s not entirely confident with her appearance and would love larger boobs and a brand new nose.

Marne said: “I’d change loads about myself! I’d have a boob job – I’d go to a C. I would like a nose job, veneers … I could go on forever.”

Despite her extensive list of cosmetic surgery procedures, she feels more confident with her bodies image than she did as a youngster.

She said: “I think I am confident, but I have insecurities too. I’m more confident in doing and saying something now, though.”

“I was chubby when I was a kid. When I was nine, my cheeks were like little sumo wrestlers! I wasn’t bullied, they just disappeared when I got older.”

The self-proclaimed true Geordie lass, who loves hitting the toon and having a laugh, also believes whilst looking good is important, you shouldn’t be guided by what other people think.

She added to Now magazine: “I think you’ve got to be yourself, I don’t worry about other people. I go to the gym, I do a few classes a week. I eat well but I have cheat days – I had 10 cookies yesterday!”

When you choose Desire for your breast enlargement surgery, you’re bound to have plenty of questions – what size and shape you can achieve, not to mention what your surgery will involve – so your surgeon will sit down with you and offer expert advice, making sure everything is totally clear before you decide to go ahead. We’ll discuss your medical history and reassure you completely.

Did Marilyn Monroe have cosmetic surgery?

Screen legend and Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe’s famous beauty may have been in part due to cosmetic surgery, according to recently revealed medical notes and X-rays.

The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot actress had cosmetic surgery, according to medical notes and  X-RAYS dating from 1950 to 1962.Marilyn Monroe cosmetic surgery?

A file of Marilyn’s unseen doctors notes were written by cosmetic surgeon Michael Gurdin and later acquired by an anonymous friend, who has now put them up for auction.

The contents of the documents are expected to end long running speculation that Monroe went under the cosmetic surgeons knife to achieve her famous Hollywood siren image. Gurdin’s notes contain references to a cartilage implant in Monroe’s chin, which he noted appeared to be dissolving.

Monroe used the alias Miss Joan Newman during her visits to Gurdin, which appears on the paperwork alongside her address in Brentwood, California.

Gurdin’s notes are thought to confirm the rumours which circulated during the star’s life that she did indeed opt for surgery on her chin and nose.

Marilyn Monroe's Medical Notes

The secret haul of medical notes and X-rays will go under the hammer at Julien’s Auctions, in Beverly Hills, California, on November 9 – 10, where they are expected to fetch between £10,000 and £20,000.

Martin Nolan, Executive director of Julien’s Auctions said: “Nobody really thought about Marilyn Monroe having cosmetic surgery. It was always speculation – did she or didn’t she? “They thought she was such a natural beauty, they didn’t want to believe.”

Today, over 60 years after Marilyn underwent cosmetic surgery, the skill, experience and safety of cosmetic surgeons has improved immeasurably.

The National Institute for Aesthetic Research, a new centre for cosmetic surgery research has opened in the UK.

National Institute of Aesthetic Research

National Institute of Aesthetic Research at The Royal College of Surgeons, London

The centre which is partly funded by the cosmetic surgery industry, is a response to the PIP breast implant scandal in 2010 and is being set up by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the charity The Healing Foundation.

Launched following the review of plastic surgery by Sir Bruce Keogh – NHS Medical Director where he criticised the absence of data surrounding plastic surgery operations.

Kate Ward from Leeds, who had  breast enlargement surgery with PIP implants in 2004, then subsequent had to pay £9,000 to have the implants removed and replaced with new ones.

Ms Ward told BBC Radio 4 : “It is good that lessons are being learnt and changes are being made. I hope by setting up this institute it will stop women being placed in the situation thousands are in at the moment.”

‘Patient Safety’

Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS medical director, believes it will make a real difference to patient safety.

He said: “This joint initiative is the first recommendation of my review to be implemented and I know it will provide a major contribution to patient safety.”

Rajiv Grover, president of the BAAPS

Rajiv Grover, president of the BAAPS, conceded that it was an embarrassment it has taken so long for the world’s first institute related to aesthetic research to open.

He said: “We have been campaigning for this institute for 10 years but there is now a willingness to endorse this.”

Here at Desire Cosmetic Surgery, we welcome the creation of the The National Institute for Aesthetic Research and any measures that improve cosmetic surgery safety.

Rise in new mothers going under the knife to lose their mummy tummy

For many women the return to work after childbirth, used to mean worrying about a new post-pregnancy wardrobe, however more and more are turning to cosmetic surgeons to help them regain their pre-pregnancy look as quickly as possible.

Kate Middleton's Mummy Tummy

Some are even under going a ‘two-in-one’ tummy tuck and breast lift, desperate to snap back into shape when the sensible diet and exercise route of celebrity mothers like Kate MiddletonLiz Hurley, Victoria Beckham and Myleene Klass doesn’t produce the results quick enough.

Circle Hospital plastic surgeon consultant Judy Evans, said the ‘two-in-one’ package have become ‘incredibly popular’ with women who are returning to work from maternity leave.  ‘They have time to have surgery – but not enough to have two separate operations,’ she told a recent plastic surgery conference.

Harley Street cosmetic surgeon Raj Ragoowansi also said ‘the number of middle-class women coming to me for yummy mummy tummy tuck, has doubled in the last five years.’

Angelina Jolie’s Breast Cancer Surgeon Dr Kristi Funk talks about her double mastectomy

Angelina Jolie’s brave decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy after learning she had an 87% risk of developing breast cancer due to a defective BRCA1 gene, sent shockwaves through Hollywood and around the world.

Now Doctor Kristi Funk, the surgeon who performed the double mastectomy has spoken out about Jolie’s decision for the first time. The surgeon who has also treated singer Sheryl Crowe recently spoke to Mario Lopez of Extra and revealed Angelina’s decision wasn’t based out of ‘fear.’

Angelina Jolie and husband Brad Pitt

She didn’t have [the double mastectomy] right away, but probably knew with her family history that it was a choice she would eventually make,’ she said, before adding Her decision was not made overnight. It wasn’t based in fear.’

12% of women will develop breast cancer at sometime within their lives, however for those with BRCA1 abnormalities the risk can be as high as 87%, say Myriad Genetics the company who created the test to screen for them.  Undoubtedly the death of Jolie’s mother,  Marcheline Bertrand at the age of 56 to ovarian cancer in 2007 played a big part in her decision as carrying the gene also gives women a 50% risk of developing ovarian cancer too.

Dr Funk when asked how Angelina is doing now, she replied ‘perfect’  also describing husband Brad Pitt as being ‘the coolest’ throughout the treatment.

She also revealed that Jolie’s choice to go public with her decision was always likely:

‘I knew that was her intention. She is just philanthropic to the core. She could never keep this a secret, and be who she is!  She is someone who wants to save lives and she is doing that every day!’

Here at Desire Cosmetic Surgery, we salute Angelina Jolie’s brave decision and the work she’s done to raise awareness of breast cancer and preventative screening amongst women. Preparing to undergo any surgical procedure be it preventative, reconstructive or cosmetic is daunting and you may have many worries, fears and questions.

Which is why here at Desire, our surgeons will sit down with you and offer expert advice, making sure everything is totally clear before you decide to go ahead. We’ll discuss your medical history and reassure you completely.

Kyle Richards showing off new tummy after liposuction

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards has been showing off her slim new figure whilst dining out at Craig’s Restaurant in West Hollywood recently, after revealing earlier this year that she had undergone liposuction.

Kyle Richards setting out with new figure after liposuction

Last year before she had the cosmetic procedure done Kyle admitted she was ‘self-conscious’ about her figure, telling Bravo special, Secrets Revealed that ‘After having four kids, no matter what exercise I did, the love handles wouldn’t go away!’

‘I wanted to wear jeans and a tucked in shirt and not feel self-conscious,’ the busy working mum continued.

The decision to go under the cosmetic surgeons knife wasn’t taken lightly according to RadarOnline.com after a source said  ‘They were filming around the pool and Camile and Brandi immediately stripped down to these teeny tiny bikinis – and, needless to say, they both looked stunning.’

‘Kyle felt so intimidated, there was no way she was taking anything off in front of the cameras, she felt totally inadequate.’

With he sexy new body, Richards can now have the self-confidence to step out with her sexy co-stars. However she’s still aware of the dangers of growing old in Hollywood, tweeting last week - ‘I really want to be one of those people that laughs about the process of ageing but… it’s just not funny,’

Paris Hilton’s aunt, Kyle will returns to our TV screens this autumn when the fourth series of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills airs on Bravo.

Here at Desire, we give you all the information and time you need to come to the right decision. The dangers of bargain ‘surgery holidays!’

The market for ‘surgery holidays’ is booming as many UK women attracted by the lower costs of surgery in Eastern Europe travel abroad to try and obtain the body they’ve always desired at a bargain price!

Figures from the International Passenger Survey, showed last year 70,000 people travelled abroad for ‘medical tourism’, with over 50% of those trips for cosmetic surgery procedures.

Those tempted by the low prices include Claire Rigley, a 30 year old office manager from Nottingham. She told The Daily Mail that her 40FF chest was ‘huge – but shapeless’ and ‘There was never any fullness, just fat, so they sagged. When I lost weight in 2008, they were even droopier’. She looked into surgery and decided that she needed not only an uplift, but implants to improve the shape.

Claire Ridgely

Looking online, I found a clinic in Prague which would do it within two weeks for £3,500, including flights and accommodation,’ she says. ‘When I got in touch and sent them some pictures, they said they could fit me in within two weeks.’

Tempted by cosmetic surgery packages costing half the price of those a home, Claire like many medical tourists are often those on more modest incomes nurses, teachers, hairdressers and administrators.

The decision is one Claire ultimately regrets, days after arriving home after an apparently successful operation her implants leaked and she was rushed to hospital suffering a serious infection. The Prague based clinic, couldn’t be contacted for corrective treatment and her body has been left disfigured. Far from an isolated incident, as the number of women travelling abroad for ‘surgery holidays’ so do the numbers suffering complications and those needing corrective or even life saving treatment later on the NHS.

With research showing that one in six patients suffer complications as a result of cosmetic surgery and 9% needing further treatment, it’s essential that any decision on which clinic to use for your surgery, is not only based on price but also the level of after care provided should something go wrong!

‘With 60 per cent of British plastic surgeons reporting a rise in the number of patients seeking help after cosmetic surgery abroad, lack of aftercare is clearly one of the biggest flaws with medical tourism’, says Rajiv Grover, president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

Here at Desire Cosmetic Surgery, we offer a Lifetime Aftercare to ensure that you’ll be delighted with your new appearance following your surgery, but we’ll always be here to help you resolve any problems, worries or queries you may have.

So if you’re tempted to save money by going abroad for cosmetic surgery, please think carefully about the accessibility and level of the after care provided and if the ultimate cost will be your health!

Another satisfied breast augmentation customer – Erica Cordock

Happy customer Erica Cordock after her recent breast augmentationI did as much research as I possibly could before I decided to go ahead with breast augmentation as I didn’t know quite what to expect. I know the internet doesn’t tell you everything but it certainly can help you make your mind up!

I went to see Desire Cosmetic Surgery after a visit to another surgeon in Manchester as I wasn’t quite happy with what they had to offer. At the end of the day it’s money I saved so I wanted it done correctly!

The reason or best said reasons why I choose Desire was because:

  1. The surgeon is a breast specialist, therefore he works with breasts & nothing else so that straight away told me he will not be sloppy, he will be very professional at what he does.
  2. He also works with the NHS so I know I will be looked after properly!
  3. I found that through Desire, I got more straight forward answers, a more realistic outcome.
  4. Georgina who I first got in touch with was very lovely to me & she is very easy to speak with. (Very important for us ladies)
  5. My breasts finally fit my body shape 400cc & I have a D cup!

They wouldn’t have looked good at all if I had stuck with the first surgeon I saw, I was a very small/flat A cup after breast feeding & I never got my bust back. I was offered 270cc silicone implants & told it would create a possible D cup (no way) plus they were more expensive!!

I’m very pleased with my choice of surgery! :D I am still going through the healing stages but very much so enjoying a fuller me! I no longer have a boy’s chest!!

Thank you to everyone at Desire Cosmetic Surgery!

Josie celebrates weight loss with new breasts

Josie Gibson with her new breasts

Losing a significant amount of weight is an enormous achievement and it’s one that should be celebrated!

Most of us know how hard it is to stick to a healthy diet and exercise regime to shift those extra pounds – although for some of us there’s a much bigger challenge to tackle on the road to self-esteem and body confidence.

For Big Brother winner Josie Gibson, weight had always been a factor since she found herself in the public eye, experiencing the negative side of her newfound fame after being papped on the beach in a bikini and suddenly being faced with unflattering shots and comments about her body.

Now, 28-year-old Josie is having the last laugh after knuckling down to a strict healthy eating and exercise plan which has seen her shed an amazing six stone – and we can all agree she looks amazing!

She’s dropped from a size 20 to a size 10 – and like many women in her situation, she decided to go for a breast enhancement procedure to make sure her breasts matched her new body after being left with “two flaps of skin”, as she told New! magazine.

Josie is now delighted with her new breasts.

She’s been chatting to New! magazine about her nerves before the operation and has thanked her family and friends for the support they offered at each stage of the process.

She told New!: “People have been really supportive. I think they understand because I had two flaps of skin and my nipples were all over the place.

“I was umming and ahhing about the size of them. I was going to go to a C, then a D, then a DD, but I think for my height and my frame, a C wouldn’t have made a difference.

“I didn’t want them too big because I still want to train hard. Now they’re not too big and they’re not too little – they’re perfect.”

Josie’s operation was carried out by London surgeon Alex Karidis.

She added: “I feel so sexy. They just make me look a bit more like a woman instead of a Neanderthal.”

Every day the Desire clinic receives calls from women just like Josie who have been through such a life-changing weight loss journey.

Many women find the changes to their body have a negative effect on the way their breasts look – so at a time in their life when they expected to finally find the body confidence they craved, they find themselves feeling insecure that their breasts don’t complement their new shape.
